Think Local to Save Big On Rental Cars When Traveling

My wife is taking a trip to Fredericton, NB and needed to rent a car for the week she’ll be there. We looked at Kayak, Priceline, Orbitz and other travel booking sites. The best price we could find for a mid-size car was around $500 for the week (fees and taxes included).

Think Local to Save on Rental Cars

I suggested she look up “car rentals Fredericton, NB” thinking that she might be able to find a slightly better deal locally. The upshot is that she found a national rental car firm (Discount Car and Truck Rentals – 300 locations throughout Canada and Australia) offering an intermediate-sized car for $262 (fees and taxes included), a little more than half the lowest price we found on the travel aggregator sites. Even more surprising was that a quick check of top-line rental agencies like Avis, Enterprise and others yielded savings of $160 to $200 per week when priced through the local link.

Larger markets are more competitive and you may find the best prices through Priceline, Kayak, Hotwire and the like but it pays to check locally for small markets, and large. Oh, and while Discount Car doesn’t have an on-airport presence, they do pick you up at the terminal.
