This year’s Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11. The official Mother’s Day holiday came about in the 1900s as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who wanted a way to honor the sacrifices mothers made for their children. Jarvis fought to have Mother’s Day added to the national calendar and by 1912, many states had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday. Eventually, in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
